While core Joomla multilanguage system basically works as filter (filtering category, menu etc items based on current language, while items are independent), LanternFish translations are always based on the default language item to translation(s) relation(s). This is why there is no "All" language in LanterFish - All is not an language, it is a filtering setting. But don't worry, by default items written in the default language behave the same, they are shown when there is no translation. So first thing to configure in the LanternFish is to set default language. If you change this setting later all the mappings are lost!
LanternFish picks default language item (content, menu, category, gallery image..) and replaces only translatable fields with the fields from translation, while the rest of the fields from translalion are discarded. This has numerous advantages - e.g. when item is a gallery picture you only need to translate title and description, but you don't need to add the picture again as you would with core mutilanguage. It also enables full automatic translations of menu paths without having to duplicate the whole menu and category structure - LanterFish translates each part in the path separately by replacing default language aliases with aliases from menu/category/item translations.
The most useful and recommended way is to use Translation manager in the LanternFish component. There you can see source item and translation in the same interface, which makes it much easier to do translations than with separate items.
For core items (content, menus, modules, categories) there is also another option - inline translations. You can set item in non-default language as translation, directly in its native interface where you also need to select its associated default language item. This works with new items or existing ones and will create a link between original and this translation.
Using inline translation feature you can change translations associations: open translation and change "Is this translation" to No, Save, then set this back to yes and you will be able to pick different default language item as the source item.
By default all default language items - translated when translation exists and untranslated when it doesn't - plus all unassociated items in current language are shown in the content lists (list or blog view). There is a setting "Remove untranslated from lists" in the component options to change this behaviour. Also there are various options for missing translation behaviour - show original (with or without info), show some info text instead etc.
You will need a content element for each non-core extension you wish to translate. This elements are normally provided by extension developers and are already available for most prominent extensions.
Our plugin and jUpgradePro version are currently compatible with Joomla up to 3.4.
Before the migration:
Make sure your Joomla 1.5 installation has the latest Joomfish for Joomla 1.5 installed, if not you can download it here https://github.com/JoomFish/joomfish-2.2/archive/master.zip
We also recommend that you copy your old site to the local server (e.g. XAMPP) and peform migration locally, also it it advisable to increase resources available to HP, especially max_execution_time and memory_limit
Prepare everything:
Post migration tasks
In case something goes wrong .e.g. migration gets stuck at some point
We have decided to give the best answer awards to the following replies to our "What does Joomla mean?" question:
Third place goes to Piotr Nalepa. Not too radical, but still inspirational, here is his answer
Joomla! is a family. Family of people who enjoy using Joomla! software for building websites and web applications with ease.
Joomla! also has a big society of people who can help and who want to help each other.
Attending Joomla! community events like Joomla! Days is like joining family on Christmas Party. Everybody's so happy!
Second place goes to a bit more unconventional answer provided by Christian Hent
Joomla means: There is plenty of room at the left, right, top and bottom.
Answer a simple question and win brand new "Learning Joomla! 3 Extension Development" e-book, written by Tim Plummer

She appeared from nowhere and without asking for anything in return she resolved a situation that no-one beside people directly involved ever got to know about. At that point she silently dissapeared and went whenever her path was taking her at the moment.
With her mother like figure, she is one of the few good people of this world, always prepared to help and deal with the trouble in a gentle and subtle way.
Beside living her professional life as a webmaster, Hills, as she is also called, is one of the leading forces that drive Opentranslators - a free and open platform for Joomla extension translations, connecting hundreds of translators with numerous extension makers. If you desire to know more - you can read an old interview with her, something we hope to repeat in the near future.
By putting her in the spotlight we hope to give at least some small recognition for her merits, something she certainly deserves.
We invite you to colaborate with us - write an article an we will publish it if we find it interesting enough. You can write about any of the topics we cover (Joomla and related technologies, website building, webdesign, search engine optimization, web marketing etc.) - there is only one limitation (see bellow)
Beside an everlasting, eternal fame that will bring you millions on the long run :) :) we offer you a space for your personal and/or company/products promotion.
Each author is given a space in the "About the author" field and you can place any kind of usuall promotional text in there including direct links to your products and similar.
You can write an article about any topic except those directly targeted by your products. Simply stated - if your product is a web gallery, you cannot write about web galleries. But it is ok to write about e.g. how to choose appropriate image sizes for your site.
So no (self)promotion in the articles - this is what your about field is for.
Have you ever spent an entire day looking trough hundreds of available options on Joomla extensions directory (JED) to finally find a module that can display content - article texts and images in a way that fit your needs?
Hopefully you won't have to do it ever again as we went trough this laborius work for you.
One of the styling problems we often encounter while building sites with Joomla itself or - as in our case using Seblod CCK, is each extension having it's own popups style resultiing in visually inconsistent site. Here is a short trick to convert JCE Mediabox plugin popups to default Seblod popup type (Seblod uses JQuery Colorbox) - you can see colorbox in action on this site if you click on example image bellow.
Newcomers / beginners up to intermediate level
Do first, explain later. Or "Learn by example".
Orientation towards doing things. Not much words are being lost and this books is packed with practical knowledge that is most needed by those new to the Joomla world.
Things are not always ordered in the most logical way, e.g. installation chapter is followed by the chapter that starts with on building sites using CMS, some parts look like they were inserted later as they are not directly related to the previuos text.
Also the book is missing some short introductory - orientation type of graphics and descriptions, kind of index pages. I can imagine first time user could easily get confused by not exactly stndard terminology often used in Joomla.
Packt Publishing.
